Chapter 25

To calm my maids, most of all poor Flur, who is extra anxious, we wet tea and try to have a normal chat, trying to keep cool heads when there is a knock at the door.

My maids jump, but I turn as the door is opened. Prince Gavril steps in, Sage right behind him. My maids immediately stand.

The prince’s eyes land on me. He sighs in relief, a small smile crossing his face. “Why hello, my pigeon. I guess I can just leave. You look like nothing happened.”

My brows draw together as I curtsy to him. “What do you mean?”

“I checked on all the other girls, and they’re all nervous or mocking,” the prince says as he steps closer. Sage closes the door behind them. “You are relaxing with a cup of tea and your maids.” He smiles at them. Flur flushes.

“Oh, well, guess I’m just calmer.”

“Even Princess Zelda was shaken up. Not you.” The prince is still smiling. “You’re really okay?”

I nod. “Yes, just fine.”

“Good. You’ll have to spend the rest of the day in your room while the staff cleans and secures the area.” The prince sighs. “But if you’re alright, as much as I’d like to stay, I still haven’t seen my parents.”

My jaw drops. My maids are white as sheets, eyes wide.

“You checked in on all the girls first?” Vivian dares ask. Flur hits her arm as if horrified.

The prince smiles and nods. “Yes, I did, but I should check in with them if you’re alright. Sure you don’t need anything?”

I shake my head then realize. “Is Jonquil okay? She wasn’t in the Ladies’ Chamber.”

“Yes, she was in her room on lockdown like everyone else. I saw her a bit ago. She’s shaken up, but they all are.”

“I hope Lilly felt better.” I recall how scared she was.

“Well, honestly, she was the worst, shaking and babbling, but she calmed down. I hope she gets used to it.” I can hear the “or she won’t make it here” in his tone.

"Are you going to send her home?”

The Prince shakes his head. “We aren’t deciding until later. A few asked to go home, but everyone is frightened. They've never gotten inside before. Not in my lifetime. So we’re not making any choices today or maybe not even tomorrow. I don’t get a choice, remember?”

“Was anyone hurt?”

“I don’t know. I checked on the girls first.” The prince frowns. “And they may not tell me, but I’ll find out what I can and let you know after dinner, alright?”

I smile a little. “You don’t have to do that.”

“I’m checking on everyone.” He smiles. “But be prepared for that to change.”

I swallow. So it will change. When, I don’t know. I nod to the prince and curtsy again. “I understand. I’ll expect you tonight.”

The prince bows his head to me, “Until then, my pigeon.” He takes my hand, surprising me, and kisses it briefly before leaving.

I look up to watch him go, my hand still floating where the prince left it.
